A selection of my better landscape shots from around Southern Africa. Includes cityscapes, night-shots and rural scenery. I don't normally do landscape shots, as you may be able to tell from the rest of my albums, so this is a little experiment of mine if you will. I hope you enjoy...

A twilight shot, prolonged exposure, of Brixton District, western Johannesburg, South Africa. I tried to capture the incredible background illuminance that hangs over the sprawl of Gauteng.
An unusual attempt at non-wildlife photography for me, I decided to take this late-night shot of Brixton District, in Central Johannesburg, Gauteng Province South Africa.

Visible is the Sentech Tower, and adjacent hotels. Brixton is an up-and-coming neighbourhood in Johannesburg, with a lot of urban regeneration being focussed in the Brixton, Berea and Hillbrow areas of the city - partly to combat the incredible crime rates in these areas, and partly in preparation for the football World Cup in 2010.

Taken from the south-facing hillside of Dunkeld West, in northern Johannesburg.
Mango plantations and the Drakensberg Mountains. Taken on the road between Hoedspruit and Tzaneen, Limpopo Province, South Africa.
This particular section of the Drakensberg Mountains shows just how varied the surrounding terrain can be - from a concealed township to the craggy mountain peaks.
Taken on the way to Tzaneen, Limpopo Province, South Africa.
South Africa is a country of big landscapes - and nowhere more so than in the Drakensberg Mountain Range. I took this heading out of Hazy View, on the provincial border between Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
If Lions and Elephants symbolise the animals of Africa, then the Acacia tree must surely denote its plant life. Found everywhere, it is - nontheless - very difficult to tire of seeing them.

Taken in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.
We were lucky enough to take a short, low-level game-flight over the Delta, and the scenery alone is worth it. Add in about a million animals of all different species and you can see why it's one of the best ways to see the Delta.

Taken over the Moremi National Park, in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.
Cutting great tracks across the lands, and spreading verdant life wherever they travel, the wetlands and waterways of the Delta are frequented by animals all day long - like this herd of Elephants.

Lily pads and vivdly coloured flowers abound in around the wetlands, and being in a mokoro gives you the chance to get up close to them for photos.

This is a Mokoro - a type of canoe not dissimilar to a punt, carved from a Mopani tree and used to get around the Okavango Delta. They can be surprisingly fast, especially when there's a herd of Elephants or a group of Hippos chasing you...

The African sunrise is a pleasure to behold, ending the horrors of the night and bringing warmth to what can be a truly freezing experience.

Though the sunset is always incredible in Africa, it is also the signal for the dangers of the night. Here the sun goes down in a matter of minutes, and when it's gone real African nightmares begin to emerge from their hiding places.

Alone in the Okavango Delta as the sun is going down, your perceptions of colour change. The world takes on a golden hue and everything seems to shimmer.

Gum trees and acacias everywhere, the setting sun is a warning to get inside or find cover quickly. Night-time in the bush is not a place for the paranoid.

On this particular evening we had taken our mokoros to a pool frequented by Hippos. The hippos were there, and were being watched over by the sunset.

The bushveld. Untamed, uninhabted and rich in colour.

Taken in the Pilanesberg National Park, Northwest Province, South Africa.
Enormous 18600x4200 pixel panoramic shot of the Mankwe Waterhole, in the Pilanesberg National Park, Northwest Province, South Africa.
This is the spectrum of perspective Africa has to offer: from the sky to the hills to the mark of man to the bush to the animals to the grasslands to the observer. To me this sums up the notion of Africa.

Taken on the outskirts of Polokwane, Limpopo Province, South Africa.
For anyone that ever wondered how they made the sun look so beautiful in holiday-catalogue shots of Africa, it's simple: it looks like that normally.

As a British national, I am currently advised not to visit Zimbabwe, which lies, tantalising, over the Zambezi river from the Victoria Falls in Southern Zambia. A country of myth and legend for anyone that visits Southern Africa, its people, places and wildlife remain something for me to fully explore on a return visit.

This photo has been completely desaturated, but I think it brings out the sharp contrast of the water and the land. Not everything is black and white in Africa, but it still serves the basis for the unspoken discrimination that lingers across the Southern countries.
An incredible sunset over the Zambezi River. I don't normally do landscape photos as you may be able to gather from my gallery, but the sky was such an incredible colour (the orange is *entirely* natural - no digital enhancements at al), that I had to have a go.

Taken from the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambian side, looking over towards Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe.
